Dating Services Suck

Posted by hopelessromantic1121 on November 29, 2006

I hate online dating services. I’ve tried them all, been matched with thousands of people, and have never EVER found the jolly good ranger I’ve been looking for. Why is this? I’m no academic, but I read a blog today that addresses this question. It’s called No Short Cuts in Life and it seems to make a lot of sense. What do you guys think?

Is Online Dating the Answer to Finding the Right Person?

eHarmony reports that it has 8 million current members, and about 33,000 members marry each year. That works out to less than ½ of one percent.

Onlinedating.com estimates that there are 100,000 marriages per year from online dating.

That sounds like a lot, until you realize that there are more than 2 million marriages in the U.S. each year. So online dating makes up for less than ½ of one percent of marriages.

This means that 99.5% of people meet and marry each year through friends, family, work, school, or church/house of worship.

eHarmony members may pay as much as $249 per year, that’s almost $2 billion per year for a service that is software driven.

Would you pay $249 for a brake job from a auto repair shop that reports has less than a 1% success record? Would you pay $249 for a stereo that won’t work 199 times out of 200 tries? Would you pay $249 for a cell phone that drops 99.5% of its calls?

What do we learn from this?
    1. Start your own online dating service to get rich.
    2. When considering how important your time is, look for a spouse at work, school, family functions, or church. This is the only method with high reliability.

Winston Churchill once said, “My most brilliant achievement was my ability to be able to persuade my wife to marry me.”
